The Mari
A word from Lydia:
"I painted this when I thought that the world was ending. Fascinated by the mythology of the Mari, a mare, made from the skull of a horse.
It's brought from house to house at the end of the year in Wales. People decorate the skull with ribbons and lace. The woman holding the
Mari is a good friend of mine who is Welsh, I wanted to bring her into the Canadian landscape, suggesting that mythology moves with the people
who hold it dear in their hearts.
The Mari rides across the Autumn field, she is the ghost horse. She brings the sadness of endings as well as the promise of new beginnings.
I was also thinking of the Death Tarot when I painted this piece."
